Caring for the planet

Are you aware of how you could be harming our planet?
Well, I’m here to tell you all about one specific thing that we do everyday that can harm our Planet.
That one thing  is plastic. Plastic is harming our country by taking away our marine animals such as
turtles, sharks and fishes. For this to stop we should use less plastic. Relating to that turtles are mistaking
plastic bags for jellyfish. We can always use our handy reusable bags that are a few dollars at Pak ‘n save
& Countdown. The reusable bags are useful because you can use them as many times as you want.

Plastic bags are dump in landfill everyday, and it stays there until it breaks down.
These bags are biodegradable so it takes 400 years to break down. So many people have tried to stop
plastic coming into our country, but there's always shops still using plastic bags. Plastic bags can also
pollute our waters by filling the oceans/seas with plastic. It is said that by the middle of this century
there will be more plastic in our ocean than marine animals.

Plastic bags are taking away food source for our marine animals. When the plastic bag takes away food
source for marine animals, it is taking away oxygen for fishes. If plastic bags take the oxygen from our
fishes then we will not have many marine animals. Although we haven’t yet ban plastic bags we are still
trying to get it to be banned. People have done campaigns to help clean the plastic that gets into our
beaches, people have also made petitions for people all around the country sign, so once we get rid of
plastic bags we will have more marine animals.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says that Plastic bags will be banned by the end of next
year. I agree with her statement because the sooner we get rid of plastic bags, the sooner we have more
marine animals. We will have a lot of marine animals if we ban plastic bags. One thing plastic bags can
do to hurt our marine animals is that it can get caught around them, so when they grow the plastic will
slowly choke them.

This whole explanation was to show people that plastic is harming our planet by taking away our
marine animals. If we don’t change the way we think, we could end up swimming in plastic bags.
Remember we don’t need to use plastic bags. We can use our Reusable bags. These Reusable bags
do not harm our planet because they are safer than the single use plastic bag.

Reflection

This week for writing we went over our Writing Samples. We got to use the LS2 Writing Rubric to
help check our understandings of writing an explanation. We were told to find a partner to work with. My
Partner was Miiana, but now currently Sandra. We both had a quick read through on each others
explanations. Once we finished we were told to copy a table that was provided on the LS2 rubric. It included
photos saying Self Check, Teacher Check and Buddy Check. In each of those photos next to it was a text
box, in the self check, we had to write what we were good at in each topic, And the things that we needed
to work on had to be written to. For the teacher check, we had to Copy and paste the part we were actually
pretty good at. Last for the buddy check, we had to let our buddy tell us what we were good at and also
what we were bad at. On the very top of the table it had each topic and the level we thought we were at
and what level our partner thought that we were at. We had to be honest of what we thought our level was.

LS2 READING CHALLENGE | Book 6

Today I have decided to do another book for the LS2 READING CHALLENGE. The book that I have decided to read is Maui and the Sun. The topic was "Myth or Legend". I chose Maui and the Sun because I read it a lot when I was younger. I found a site that had an audio of someone telling the story, it also had sound effects that made the story cool to listen to.

Summary of the book - This book is about Maui, Maui was  getting angry at the Sun because it would always go down to fast. Maui called his brothers and told him about his problems with the sun, A problem he had was that he never got enough time to eat his dinner. His brothers also had the same problem, but they couldn't get enough time to hunt. So they planned to make a hook using flax leaves. Once they had done that, They waited til the sun was about to rise. (Moments later) The sun was finally starting to rise, Maui and his brothers then swung their hooks and grabbed onto the sun and pulled it down. The Sun Exclaimed on why they were doing that to him. Maui yelled telling him that he was to fast to set. The Sun said "CANT YOU SEE I'M DYING!", Maui didn't want him to die, because if he did they wouldn't have any sun at all. Maui told his brothers to let go, and Maui said "That should make him set slower"

This book was interesting to listening, I recommend this book because it is a great story to learn from.

LS2 READING CHALLENGE | Book 5

This week I have decided to read another book for the LS2 READING CHALLENGE. This week the topic I am doing is "Your Choice Genre" This topic is where I get to choose any book I want and write about it.

Here is my summary of the book.
Exciting new magical adventure series for girls – will you answer the call of Silver Dolphins? Antonia is a secret Silver Dolphin – she's responsible for helping the creatures of the bay when their environment is threatened, by responding to the call of her magic necklace. When Antonia goes on holiday, she doesn’t expect her necklace to sound until she returns to Sandy Bay. But when exotic sea creatures are in danger, she hears their call. Who needs her help in the moonlit waters? This book was very interesting to read. I recommend it for anyone to read.

LS2 READING CHALLENGE | Book 4

This week I have chosen to do another Book Series Book for the LS2 READING CHALLENGE. The book that I chose was Ella Diaries Total TV Drama.

Summary of the book - Ella has been chosen for the quiz team and is going on television game show called Quiz Zam. Shes going to be a star! But Ellas TV dreams soon turn into total DRAMA when Zoe doesn't make the team and know-it-all Peach gets her spot instead! Worst of all, the other team on the show is super smart ... and super MEAN! Will Ella and Peach EMBARRASS themselves on national television? Or can they work out a way to share the spotlight? 

This book was not as interesting, so I don't recommend this book unless you want to get bored. Other then that, it was a pretty good book.

Kiwi Sport | Ki o Rahi

This week Thursday we had our third session of Ki o Rahi. This week we played on the public field. When we first got the the field we did a recap on what the names of the Maori things that we used last week. We also noticed that the Poe wasn't there. We were put into the Taniwha and Kioma groups. One group was put in Te Roto and the other group was outside of Te Roto. If we were put into Te Roto then we had to tag the people that we outside of Te Roto. We could only tag the people outside of Te Roto if they had gone into Te Roto and tried to go and save there wife (Te ra). The group in Te Roto had to make sure that they weren't keeping big gaps for the other group to come in. It was fun to try and stop the group from getting in, but also if they got in and was holding their wife, then they had to try and get out without getting tagged. We then swapped and did the same thing over again. It was a tiring day today, but we still tried to play.

This weeks Kiwi Sport wasn't as respectful, most of us were bored and tired because of the heat, most of us were disrespectful because our teacher was not with us for the first part, and we showed bad attitude becasue most of us thought that the game was boring. With that said, if we carried on with the bad behaviour, we might not have kiwi sport for the term.  We need to show sportsmen ship to our coach, teachers and to the game. We shouldn't say that we don't want to participate because we can learn something from this. Ki O Rahi is based on a Maori Story, We can all learn about how the wife (Te Rah) Was taken, and how she was saved.

Tech @ Tamaki College

This week at Tamaki College we continued to figure out designs that we could make out of wood. After 2 weeks of thinking I thought of my 8 designs that I was going to do. I thought of 3 ideas at home so that I could use at tech. For the designs that I made, I had to make sure that I showed the joint. It was hard to draw the joints in our ideas, but I got there. Once I showed Mr Grundy my 8 designs he approved of them all, I then got to move onto using a piece of wood to measure out a designs that I chose. Before I started drawing with the piece of wood, we had to write our name on both sides of the wood so that when we cut the would our name will still be on the wood. I then got out the ruler and stated drawing, But at the time I was about to do my second drawing part, it was time to pack up to get back on the bus. I had a great time at Tech this week, I am so excited to see what happens next week.
