Kiwi Can Reflection

This week for Kiwi Can we have been talking about Positive communication. We started off with the energiser, it was called "Up and Down" How to play: There are 2 teams, there will be cones that are up and down, one team will have to flip the cone up and the other team flips it down. The winning team would have the most cones up or down. Next we had the talk about Positive Communication, We talked about what it does to someone. Last we did the activity, the activity was called Street Fighter. How to play: 2 groups stand in a line, then the people in the front of the line stand up while the rest of the group sits down until its their turn. There were commands like
1 - One hit with hand
2 - 1 hit with each hand
3 - kick
4- spin
5 - push air with hands.
The winner would be the last person standing, for our class Haylee won, so she gave us a point, our group won.

Tech @ Tamaki College


This week for tech we have been doing some edits on the workbook. Mr. Grundy has told us about small parts in the silhouettes, he has told us that it would break off when its in the metal process. He has also helped us change the silhouettes to make the shape better. I am close to finishing my photos, I have decided to do my mum as my creation for pewter casting because she's special to me. I enjoyed tech this week and I hope to get onto the drawing.

Kupe x Captain Cook Venn Diagram

For this reading task I worked with my reading group (Kiwi Group) to create a venn diagram. This venn diagram was created to compare the navigators Kupe and Captain Cook. To fill in the venn diagram we watched 4 videos based on each navigator and used the information to fill in the spaces.

Tech Reflection

This week for Tech we have been doing pewter casting with Mr. Grundy. Today we looked at continuing with our Workbook that we started last week. I have changed some of my silhouettes as Mr. Grundy made it clear that small parts can break off easily because of how soft the metal would be and because the size of it.  I enjoyed tech thi week and I hope next week we will get onto the creation.

Summer Learning Journey Assembly



Today we had our first Assembly of the year, it was also the Summer Learning journey assembly. This is where people from the Summer Learning journey came to award the people that participated in the Summer holidays. The first place winner would get a Nintendo Switch. The people that placed were Alex, Victoria and Sakina. I came 4th and got a ball as my prize, I honestly pictured something else but I was happy with what I got, other than that I really enjoyed doing all the activities and the comments over the holiday.

Te Tiriti O Waitangi

LI: To identify key words in a text and use these words to collaboratively summarise the events in the text.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a very important time in New Zealand history. In 1860, representatives from the British Crown and Maori Chiefs signed a treaty of agreement, to let the Maori have ownership over their land and property. Partnership, Participation, and Protection were the underlining principles under the treaty. They got the treaty to be signed by over 500 Maori chiefs.

This week we looked at Te Tiriti O Waitangi, We did this to look at the history of the treaty of waitangi. We created a small summary of the text that we read.  We used words from the key words that we chose from the text to create the summary. 

Tech @ Tamaki College

This week Friday the year 8’s started their first session of tech at Tamaki College. This term we are working with pewter in Mr. Grundy’s class. On our first day we looked at a few examples of some of the things we might be creating, and Mr. Grundy also showed us the process of how it is created. Then we started making up some of our own ideas for the pewter.

Kiwi Can Reflection


Today was our first session of Kiwi Can. To start of Kiwi Can we talked about what fairness and fair play. We then got on with our energiser, the energiser was called change places.
This is how to play it:
Every gets in a circle, then there is one person that says something like "Who likes Ice Cream" then whoever likes ice cream would change places with someone else in the circle. Then continue until there is a winner. After we played the energiser we talked about Empathy. We talked more about what it means, how you can have empathy for someone and what situations you would be in to show empathy. After talking about Empathy we did our activity, our activity was a roleplay of Negative and Positive. My group was roleplaying negative, In my group was Victoria, Lily, Liletina, Diana and Afatia. Our role play was about all of us playing tag and then someone falls over, The rest of the group would laugh and not care. Kiwi Can was great today and I enjoyed.

Explanation: Plastic Pollution

Why is plastic pollution a problem for our coastlines?

Did you know that over 1,000,000 sea animals lose their lives each year due to the huge amounts of plastic waste in our oceans and coastlines?! Mistaking it for food, the animals will eat the plastic...but as it takes years to break down, it stays trapped in their body and they will eventually die. From our actions, they are forced to suffer and we create a bigger problem for ourselves in the future...How would you feel to be swimming in plastic?

Plastic makes up 90% of the pollution on the ocean’s surface; a large majority of that ends up inside our sea animals or wrapped around their neck, and intoxicating the waters. The plastic we leave lying on pathways and throwing on the street ends up in drains and leads to the sea. About 97 percent of New Zealanders have admission to plastic facilities, but why aren’t we doing anything about it?

Plastic is biodegradable but it takes around 1,000 years to break down based on the type of plastic it is. Plastic NZ says that every New Zealander takes in about 31kgs of plastic packaging a year, but only around 5.8kgs get recycled. “Love Your Coast” is one of the many projects that is taking action by bringing together groups of people to help clean the shores of New Zealand. This project decides to clean the shores of New Zealand as they want the next generation to be cleaner.

We should take action now for a better and healthier future!

This week for writing we have been looking at explanations. We created an explanation in groups of 4. Victoria, Sakina and Haylee were in my group. The explanation was about Plastic pollution and the organisation called Love your coast. Love your coast is an organization that helps pick up rubbish around New Zealand. They have loads of people helping with this action, because they want he next generation to b cleaner.

Kiwi Sport Reflection


Today was our first lesson of Kiwi Sport for the year. Our Kiwi Sport coach was Brian, he was here to teach us Cricket. He comes from HPPC. To start off the lesson we were split into 2 groups. One group would be bowling and the other would be batting. For the batting part of the activity you were to be in small teams of 4 or 3. In those small teams one person from each team would go to the front part and pick up the bat. The person with the bat had 2 tennis balls in front of them, they would need to use the bat to hit the 2 balls, once they hit the ball the rest of the teams have to try and get the balls back. Next is the other group, The other group was doing bowling. When in the bowling you throw the ball to the wicket and if it hits the wicket you put a cone on the wicket. The goal was to beat the score. I found bowling hard because I am not that good at aiming.

Ordering population numbers




Today in Maths we worked in our thinking teams to find the answer to two maths questions. In the photo you will see our group, The Math Maniacs working out the number value of our group name. To do this we used additional strategies in our place value knowledge. In the second activity we worked as a group to put the population numbers in order. To do this we used our place value knowledge.

Exploring our national current events



This week for reading we’ve been looking at national news for current events.
We have been looking at news articles to put under reading topics such as Timeliness,
Continuity, Oddity, Relevance, Magnitude, Unexpectedness, Impact, . The news we
needed to find had to be national which meant in the country, We have worked in
groups and in our group was Victoria, Ellenora, Diana, Chris,Ong,  and myself.
