Kiwi Sport | Ki O Rahi

This week we did another lesson of Ki O Rahi. We had our coach Shanice. Shanice told us that we will be focusing on the group Kioma, But we still got into the team Taniwha. We got to play golden child first. How golden child works: Taniwha team will stand outside of Te Roto. There will also be the other team (Kioma). They will be making a line, the person at the front of the line has to hold a ball. Then the game will start. The person with the ball in Taniwha has to run around the Te Roto and touch the Poe with the ball. Kioma team has to use the key to throw at the Tupu. There is also the Kaitiaki. The Kaitiaki is the guardian. The Kaitiaki's have to keep an eye on the ball, they have to try not make the key hit the Tupu. If the key hits the Tupu then the group that is hitting the ball at Tupu has to scream our Motu. When they scream out Motu then the group with the ball has to stop and throw the ball to the next person in the line. The last person in the line is the Golden child. If the key hits the Tupu while the golden child is running, then they are out and they don't score.

Kiwi Sport | Ki o Rahi

This week Thursday we had our third session of Ki o Rahi. This week we played on the public field. When we first got the the field we did a recap on what the names of the Maori things that we used last week. We also noticed that the Poe wasn't there. We were put into the Taniwha and Kioma groups. One group was put in Te Roto and the other group was outside of Te Roto. If we were put into Te Roto then we had to tag the people that we outside of Te Roto. We could only tag the people outside of Te Roto if they had gone into Te Roto and tried to go and save there wife (Te ra). The group in Te Roto had to make sure that they weren't keeping big gaps for the other group to come in. It was fun to try and stop the group from getting in, but also if they got in and was holding their wife, then they had to try and get out without getting tagged. We then swapped and did the same thing over again. It was a tiring day today, but we still tried to play.

This weeks Kiwi Sport wasn't as respectful, most of us were bored and tired because of the heat, most of us were disrespectful because our teacher was not with us for the first part, and we showed bad attitude becasue most of us thought that the game was boring. With that said, if we carried on with the bad behaviour, we might not have kiwi sport for the term.  We need to show sportsmen ship to our coach, teachers and to the game. We shouldn't say that we don't want to participate because we can learn something from this. Ki O Rahi is based on a Maori Story, We can all learn about how the wife (Te Rah) Was taken, and how she was saved.

Kiwi Sport | Ki o Rahi

As a great second part of Kiwi Sport. We did another session of Kio Rahi. Our Coach was Shanice. We played on the field. Shanice had already set out the area that we were going to play in. We first learnt about what each item/area was called. We talked about Poe (Pole), Te roto (Island), Tupu (Middle thing), Key (Ball) etc. Shanice  put us into groups called Taniwha & Kioma. I was in team Taniwha. How golden child works: Taniwha team will stand outside of Te Roto. There will also be the other team (Kiamo). They will be making a line, the person at the front of the line has to hold a ball. Then the game will start. The person with the ball in Kiamo has to run around the Te roto and touch the poe with the ball. Taniwha team has to use the key to throw at the tupu. If the ball hits the Tupu then the person running with the ball has to stop and throw the ball to the next person in the line. The last person in the line is the Golden child. If the golden child stops then they loose. 

The last part is where we do golden child but there are defenders of the tupu. The defenders have to try and make the ball avoid the Tupu.

Kiwi Sport | Ki o Rahi

As an Active day to start off the week, We played Ki O Rahi as our Kiwi Sport. Our Kiwi Sport teacher was named Shanese. We had to watch a short movie of The Legend of Rahi. It was a short summary of the real version. It had lots of detail of what had happen. I found out that Te rah (The wife) got kidnapped, The Husband went to go find his wife.

We then went outside to play game. WE played Rats and Rabbits. We went into a group of 2, Girls Vs Boys. Instead of being called Rats and Rabbits, We were called Taniwha and Kiamai. The girls were the Kiamai and the boys were called Taniwhas. We had to listen out for our groups name. If our groups name was called out then we would have to tag the other team members. If you got tagged then you would have to sit out, but in our case, We just continued.

We then played a game similar to Invisible touch, There was a twist though. The twist was where the Kiwi Sport instructor would yell out a sport to play with one ball. The winner was the person who got the goal.

Day 4 SLJ Activity 2

For this activity I had to go and read 4 old maori games. I had to choose which game I wanted to do and I picked Ki o Rahi. I haad to name the game, the goal or purpose of the game and two rules about the game.

1. Name of game - Ki o rahi
2. The goal or purpose of game - The goal of the game is to hit the object i the middle circle.
3. Two rules -  When you are about to kick or throw the ball you have to throw it to the middle and the second rule is that if someone takes off one of your tags then your team has to give the ball to the other team.
